Anatevka

(May 2016)

At the turn of the 20th century in the Ukrainian village of Anatevka, the poor milkman Tevye lives with his wife Golde and their five daughters. Three of them are to marry, though not as their father would wish. Nevertheless, he lives his life according to tradition until the Tsar commands the relocation of the Jews, resulting in Tevye emigrating to America with his wife and two youngest daughters.

Così fan tutte

Abetted by the philosopher Don Alfonso, Ferrando and Guglielmo decide to put the loyalty of their respective fiancées Dorabella and Fiordiligi to the test. In their “School for Lovers”, Mozart and Da Ponte let the four lovers in question undergo and endure all aspects of love. By the end they come to recognise that love is not a matter of “one size fits all.”

Der Bettelstudent

Krakow, 1704: the Saxon Governor, Colonel Ollendorf, has kissed the impoverished Polish Count’s daughter Laura on the shoulder and in so doing has earned himself a slap in the face. To avenge himself, he supplies the student Symon with money and a princely title in order to win Laura’s affections. Not only does Laura fall in love, but so does Symon, which was never part of the plan. By the finish, the Saxons are not only snubbed, but are well and truly ousted. The Poles’ successful uprising is heralded by gunfire.

Der Kongress tanzt

Werner Richard Heymann composed the music to film classics such as "The Three from the Filling Station", "Ninotchka" and, in the year 1931, Erik Charell’s "The Congress Dances". During the Vienna Congress of 1815, the Tsar of Russia falls for the lovely glove maker Christel. This is most convenient for the Austrian Chancellor Metternich, who hopes this new romance will distract the Tsar from state affairs. The Tsar, however, has brought along a lookalike.

Der Mann von La Mancha

A musical classic is turning 50. "The Man of La Mancha" was premiered on Broadway on 22nd November 1965. A befuddled Spanish knight who battles against windmills as a musical hero? This gamble paid off with a record-breaking run of 2,300 performances and the piece remains popular to this day. Robert Meyer will be making his debut portraying the „Knight of the Sad Countenance.“

Der Zauberer von Oz

“The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by Lyman Frank Baum is America’s most famous fairy tale which attained worldwide cult status through the screen adaptation starring Judy Garland (1939). Its best-known song “Over the Rainbow” by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg was awarded an Oscar in 1940. The stage version of this masterpiece, as originally developed in 1987 for the Royal Shakespeare Company, ist shown for the firt time at the Volksoper.

Die Csárdásfürstin

Scarcely any other work within the genre does so well in reflecting the spirit of doom during World War One. „This vale of tears is like a nightclub to me”… „Who knows how long the earth will keep turning…” Against this backdrop, the Reigning Prince’s son Edwin and Sylva Varescu, a variety singer beneath his
rank, battle for their love, which Edwin’s father tries to thwart …

Don Giovanni

Mozart’s masterpiece "Don Giovanni" is surely one of the richest works within the operatic repertoire: both comic and tragic, ranging from ballads to cloaks-and-daggers, a moral portrait of its time and yet simultaneously a timeless piece of world theatre … The stage director Achim Freyer sees Don Giovanni
as an archetype: „the great driving force, strong and inescapable,“ bringing movement and light into our lives.

Fürst Igor

Borodin spent a quarter of a century working on his only opera and didn’t live to finish it. The work was completed by Alexander Glazunov. Its epic choral scenes, Polovtsian dances and finely crafted characters
– the lingering Igor, the brutal Galitsky, the power politician Konchak, the turncoats Skula and Yeroshka – made "Prince Igor" the most significant Russian national opera since "Boris Godunov".

Hello, Dolly!

One of the biggest musical hits of recent years, Josef E. Köpplinger’s staging of “Hello, Dolly!” will be making a welcome return to the Volksoper repertoire. Sigrid Hauser (Dolly) and Robert Meyer (Vandergelder) will once again prove that Jerry Herrman’s musical has lost none of its charm more than 50 years after its first performance.

Im weißen Rössl

This operetta is labelled by some as the „first German musical“ and perhaps the most enduringly successful one from the interwar period. For the first time, a reconstruction of the original version is performed. Josef E. Köpplinger’s production whisks the audience on a journey through the emotional and geographical highs and lows of the idyllic Salzkammergut landscape.

Junge Talente des Wiener Staatsballetts II

Recognizing the talent of dancers and providing them with the appropriate encouragement is a priority for any ballet company. This evening gives the exceptionally gifted younger dancers the opportunity to try out roles which they have so far not had the chance to perform within the current repertoire. The works may be classical or contemporary, or pieces especially created for this occasion.

Kismet

In 1954 it came to pass that a long-dead Russian composer received the Tony award for Best Musical. Robert Wright and George Forrest had adapted melodies by Alexander Borodin for their show Kismet, set in medieval Baghdad. The Volksoper audience is presented with this oriental fairy tale musical for the first time, starring Rodney Gilfry in the main role and Rebecca Nelsen as his daughter Marsinah, just a few weeks before the premiere of "Prince Igor" – Borodin’s only opera.

La Bohème

(April 2015)

Puccini’s opera tells the tragic love story of Mimì and Rodolphe against the backdrop of the colourful milieu of Parisian artists, students, seamstresses and prostitutes. “I don’t know of anyone who has depicted Paris in this era as well as Puccini in La Bohème,” raved Claude Debussy. The Volksoper will be reviving Harry Kupfer’s spectacular production from the year 1984.

Mozart à 2 / Don Juan

The works of choreographer Thierry Malandain are showcased at the Volksoper for the first time with “Mozart à 2” and “Don Juan”. Both works are connected by the common theme of relationships.Whilst the first piece is of a gentle and sensitive nature, passions boil over considerably more in the second piece.

Onkel Präsident

Friedrich Cerha based his musical farce "Onkel Präsident” on Molnàr’s stage show “One, Two, Three,” which was made into a film by Billy Wilder in 1961. The president, an all-powerful boss of a steel company, pulls strings in order to fabricate a presentable husband for the heiress Melody Moneymaker. He transforms the bicycle messenger Pepi Powolny into a top manager of noble rank.

Pariser Leben

Jacques Offenbach produced one of his greatest masterpieces in 1866 with “La vie parisienne.” A Swedish married couple, Baron and Baroness Gondermark, want to explore the French capital as tourists. Whilst he’s in the mood for gallant adventures, she would rather go to the theatre. The Parisian man-about-town Gardefeu falls in love with the Baroness and spares neither cost nor effort in winning her affections and showing the visitors in his own way how life in Paris ought to be lived.

Schneekönigin

Choreographer Michael Corder’s successful and highly acclaimed full-length ballet "The Snow Queen" is based on the score of "The Stone Flower" by Sergei Prokofiev, the music newly arranged by Julian Philips. The freely-adapted story recalls Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale. The creative costumes and sets designed by Mark Bailey heighten the magical atmosphere of the ballet.

The Sound of Music

(April 2016)

The lively abbey novice Maria Rainer is sent to take care of seven children in the home of the widowed Baron von Trapp. The former captain of the war navy raises his children with military discipline and is at first skeptical of Maria’s unorthodox nature. But both he and the children soon grow fond of Maria and she accompanies the Trapp family on their hazardous escape from the Nazis.

Viva la Mamma

An ensemble is preparing for an opera premiere in a provincial theatre. The resolute mother of the seconda donna bursts into the company’s usual state of chaos and ends up treading the boards of the stage herself. The title role of Donizetti’s comedy about do’s and don’ts offers a famous part for a bass. The star tenor Rolando Villazon gave his directorial debut for this Volksoper production.
