Der Barbier von Sevilla

(January 2017)

Rossini's comic opera, which had its world premiere in 1816, was a work for which he ought to have won several prizes. A prize for speed: "... I wrote the first act in eight days, and the second in another twelve". One for courage: He was daring enough to compete with the great maestro Païsiello, whose "Barbiere di Siviglia" was a favourite with the public. This was probably the reason Rossini gave his work the new title "L'inutile precauzione". "The precaution" was, indeed, "futile" over the long term, because this fireworks of a piece full of spirited and witty musical numbers was soon to become the very definition of Italian opera buffa.

Die Hochzeit des Figaro

(October 2016)

In 1785, Mozart and his librettist Da Ponte turned to a revolutionary French play: Beaumarchais’s comedy "The Mad Day". The manservant Figaro and his master, Count Almaviva, become opponents when Almaviva starts pursuing Figaro’s intended bride. The explosive conflict between the nobility and the middle class is played out in the private sphere - as a struggle between the frivolous arrogance of the master and the honest feeling of the servant. "The Marriage of Figaro" has thus become a timelessmasterpiece. Marelli’s stage is an artful combination of two Baroque paintings and Dagmar Niefind‘s modernised Rococo costumes lend the production a simple elegance.

Hoffmanns Erzählungen

In 1881 a fire broke out at Vienna‘s Ringtheater during a performance of "Hoffmann", and the orchestral material was later destroyed in a fire at the Parisian Opéra Comique. Was this the devil himself getting revenge for his satirical treatment in Offenbach‘s operetta "Orpheus in the Underworld"? In any case,
the devil also plays a central role in "The Tales of Hoffmann" by thwarting all of the titular hero‘s love affairs. Hoffmann‘s faithful Muse leads him back to the thing which enraptures and comforts him the most: art.

Wie man Karriere macht, ohne sich anzustrengen

Premier on 25.02.2017 (February 2017)

Seven Tony Awards and the coveted Pulitzer Prize - that was the proud haul of the “unutterable” musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", first performed in 1961. Frank Loesser created
a brilliant parody of the American Dream: a window cleaner manages to climb his way to the top floor of the company, but in no way does it have anything to do with outstanding achievements - it‘s all thanks to charm and chutzpah.
