Così fan tutte

Eine Produktion des Opernstudios der Volksoper

In Italian language with German surtitles

Everything starts with a bet. Harmless. A game. A plan unfolds from a bit of drunkenness and amorous rivalry, at the end of which nothing is the same as before: Bet that we will always be true to ourselves – no matter what temptations we encounter. Under the watchful eyes of Don Alfonso and Despina, the couples Guglielmo/Fiordiligi and Ferrando/Dorabella embark on this experiment. The wedding bells may ring in the finale, but the path leading up to it is filled with numerous disguises, emotional confusion, situational comedy, and the search for true, great, untouchable love.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte have written a timeless classic with Così fan tutte. Between historical comedy of mistaken identities and an astonishingly contemporary chamber drama, they expose the protagonists' ideals of love and relationships and show that many things could still happen like this today.

What about love in times of unlimited possibilities? In the generation of FOMO (fear of missing out) and Tinder, the urge for freedom often clashes with the wish for security in a paralyzing stalemate. Dating shows flourish and become ever more creative: Choosing partners only by sniffing around, meeting people at the altar who have been selected for you by algorithms based on intersections of values and interests, men fighting for their Prince Charming under the burning heat of Crete ... So let's follow Mozart's characters as they plunge into their game of love.
