Richard Wagner was the most controversial composer of his time, Jacques Offenbach the most successful. Both were bound to each other in profound dislike. Humour, social criticism and utopian dreams characterise their work. Both Wagner and Offenbach believed in the good in people and portrayed man in all his shabbiness, baseness and malignity. While Offenbach created comedies out of this contradiction, Wagner created tragedies. Offenbach and Wagner embodied two worlds that were mutually exclusive. Using texts and music by Jacques Offenbach and Richard Wagner, the duel Wagner versus Offenbach will be started. The outcome is uncertain, but it will always be entertaining and exciting!
