Salon Zuckerkandl

First Edition: Role Reversal – Cross-Gender Casting in Music Theatre

The so called "Hosenrolle" has been a popular opera trick, not only since Mozart's Cherubino, to not necessarily cast young men in such roles, but to have them embodied by a female voice. Shorter come the gentlemen in skirts. As a witch in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel or an unloved nymph in Rameau's Platée, they are usually given characters of older ladies to make fun of.

Today we think differently about gender, voice and role gender than we did when most of the operas in the canon were written. Is there potential here for the future of music theatre?

The team of the Threepenny Opera dares to take a step forward by casting Sona MacDonald as Mackie Messer for the first time ever; Oliver Liebl will play the Spelunken Jenny.

To kick off this new series of events, we are delighted to welcome Ass.-Prof. Dr. Anke Charton (University of Vienna), Franz-Erdmann Meyer-Herder (dramaturge of Die Dreigroschenoper) and Sona MacDonald (singer and actress), among others.

The evening will be complemented by a musical programme. Let's discuss, reflect and create utopias together, because that's exactly what it's there for: the Salon Zuckerkandl.
