The Seven Deadly Sins: Two sisters are sent by their family on a journey across the United States to earn money for a house. Their task becomes a test: the money must be earned by avoiding the seven deadly sins.
Gianni Schicchi: After the death of the wealthy Buoso Donati, his greedy relatives gather in Florence. When they learn he left his fortune to a monastery, they call the cunning Gianni Schicchi. Disguised as the deceased, he dictates a new will and promptly transfers the most valuable part of the inheritance—Buoso’s house—to himself.
Though musically and historically distinct, The Seven Deadly Sins and Gianni Schicchi share a sharp satirical view of bourgeois morality and greed. While Puccini lets a clever fraudster triumph, Brecht and Weill show moral virtue leading to ruin. Both works shine as vibrant musical theatre pieces and, together, reveal human failure as the essence of comedy.
