In this production, the Volksoper’s salon orchestra sits on stage in formal attire—black tailcoats and white shirts—while the two characters—Fritzi Massary and Max Pallenberg—perform in front of and among the musicians. A large crocodile lies at the front edge of the stage. The two performers wear opulent and colorful, sometimes outlandish operetta costumes—a chicken costume, a Cleopatra costume, and a green sequined dress with a feather boa, for example. The performers slip into costumes from various operettas and portray different operetta characters; opulence defines their appearance.
