Accompanying the musical premiere of Spring Awakening, based on Frank Wedekind’s Frühlings Erwachen, the Volksoper invites you to an evening in the balcony foyer that highlights the author’s connections with Vienna.

For Wedekind, Vienna was more than a stage for scandal: here his work resonated with writers and composers of modernism. Positioned between art, music, and provocation, his creative output was in lively dialogue with the Viennese avant-garde. Karl Kraus both admired and attacked him, and Alban Berg drew inspiration from Erdgeist and Die Büchse der Pandora for his opera Lulu—a key work of the 20th century.

An evening exploring the mutual influences between Wedekind and Viennese modernism.
