The Volksoper is 127 years old this year – no wonder we love traditions! One such tradition is our annual Christmas concert, in which our orchestra, members of the ensemble, our choir, and the children’s and youth choirs put you in the holiday spirit. At the same time, the music changes every year: this season, under the musical direction of internationally renowned conductor Thomas Hengelbrock, you can look forward to a blend of classical works – by Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Mendelssohn Bartholdy, among others – and beloved Christmas songs, ranging from classics such as “Leise rieselt der Schnee” and “Stille Nacht” to “Frosty the Snowman.” Musical melodies like “If I Loved You” from Carousel and “A Little bit in Love” from Wonderful Town provide the perfect balance of reflection and cheer. And when the “Hallelujah” sounds twice – in the version by Handel as well as the one by Leonard Cohen – even the biggest Christmas grouch is sure to be swept up in the festive spirit.
