Short Introduction Aschenbrödels Traum
Director Axel Ranisch: „Aschenbrödels Traum (Cinderella’s Dream) is a world premiere. A fairy-tale operetta created exclusively for the Volksoper, with music by Martina Eisenreich and a libretto by me. And the whole thing is based on a ballet fragment by Johann Strauss, which he sadly died before completing. So, it isn’t finished, that’s why we’re here! But from the very beginning: What’s it about? Imagine this: A family, a Cinderella, his stepsisters and the stepmother — in today’s world — move into an old house, Glasergasse 7 in Vienna. And it’s haunted. But who’s haunting it? Ida Grünwald. Ida Grünwald lived 126 years ago, and she’s the one who wrote the libretto from which Johann Strauss wanted to make his Cinderella ballet. So, storyline one is: Ida and Johann Strauss meet and work together on the ballet. Storyline two: we see the ballet. Storyline three is our modern Cinderella. And then there’s a love story, because this Cinderella falls in love with a football player. The stepmother has taken over a football club and manages it. Hoping to get the club back into the Champions League, they bring Real Madrid’s top talent to Vienna and that’s who our Cinderella falls for. And in the end, Johann Strauss and Ida Grünwald have to help Cinderella find his happiness. And of course, it all happens at the Vienna Opera Ball.”
