Short Introduction Die Zauberflöte

Daniel Schmutzhard (Papageno): „The story of The Magic Flute begins very simply, almost like an adventure novel. A young prince is sent by a queen to rescue her daughter, a beautiful princess, from the clutches of a dark ruler. At the prince’s side: the bird-catcher Papageno. But it quickly becomes clear that the story and its characters are far more complex, and that good and evil are not so easy to distinguish as they first appeared. In Lotte de Beer’s production, The Magic Flute remains a wonderful fairy tale. At the same time, we are searching for an emotional anchor. Someone who draws us into the story. Because The Magic Flute has a great deal to do with growing up, in our version that anchor is a 14-year-old boy who paints in order to come to terms with his own family. To bring this to life, stage designer Christof Hetzer and video designer Roman Hansi have created animated videos that conjure striking and fascinating worlds. And then there is Mozart’s ingenious music, which every child can hum along to. Tobias Wögerer will conduct the premiere. Join us as we dive into this world and ask ourselves: What is good? What is evil? What does it mean to be a man, or a woman? And what does it actually mean to grow up?”
