"The Tales of Hoffmann" is actually not a play at all, but a collection of material. If you want to stage the piece, you first have to think: Which parts do I take from this collection and what do I build my own version with?
We focus on Hoffmann, a writer with writer’s block, and the Muse. The Muse goes with him on a journey through his three stories. The three stories are very different, but actually also always the same. Hoffmann, the tragic hero, he is visited by a villain who keeps him from living out his love. The lovers are always women who are blank canvases for his Imagination. Olympia, a doll, Antonia, a singer, who will die from singing, and Giulietta, a prostitute, who steals his reflection. In a dialogue between Hoffmann and the Muse, between artist and art, we try to understand how to write a love story in a better way, and that that starts with love for yourself.
