The Pirates of Penzance: Short Introduction with Spymonkey

Directors Aitor Basauri and Toby Park (Spymonkey): „So, "The Pirates of Penzance" is by Gilbert and Sullivan, the giants of British operetta. The hero is a guy called Frederick, a young man who turns 21, who finds himself as an apprentice on a pirate ship. Frederick leaves the pirate ship, falls in love. The pirates want to marry the daughters of this Major General. There are a troop of policemen ... The story is complex, but at the same time, you don't need to understand anything to have a very, very good time. We love to play with framing devices, so we love to be able to pop out as the actors and talk to the audience directly about what's going on, to comment on the action, to make jokes about it. In this, we have an interim director of the Volksoper, who's keen to bring very traditional work back to the Volksoper, by bringing the great granddaughters of Gilbert and Sullivan to stage a new Version of "The Pirates of Penzance". That's right, a very traditional version. But the great granddaughters of Gilbert and Sullivan have completely other ideas. There are some amazing physical comedians as part of the company, and then we brought some guest performers in as well, and the mixture of those is really exciting. So, do come! If not, the pirates will go and get you! That's quite scary, Aitor. I know.“
