Short Introduction Le nozze di Figaro

Director Lotte de Beer: „’Le nozze di Figaro’ is a comedy about sex and power. Every scene plays with these two elements. How we think about sex and power has a lot to do with who we are. Where do we stand in the hierarchy? Are we male or female? Old or young? That’s why we show each of the four acts from the Point of view of a different character. The first act is told from the Count’s perspective. He sees the world as a cozy comedy, a sitcom where love is just a game to be enjoyed. Act two is told through Susanna’s eyes. A maid juggling a suicidal boss, a predatory employer, an oversexed teen, a naïve fiancé, an entire household, a wedding all at once. It’s a grotesque, Brechtian world. The third act takes us into the Contessa’s world. A nihilistic, raw, naturalistic world, where all hope is already gone. And in the fourth act, Barbarina – the youngest – and Marcellina – the oldest – come together and try, in a fluid way, to build a kind of utopia, a space for forgiveness – for “perdona”. “Le nozze di Figaro” is also a piece that lets us show what our ensemble can do. Musically, it’s a firework display. And it’s a piece that only works as an ensemble, when we play the comedy together. That’s why you should come to ‘Le nozze di Figaro’.”
