When were you first enchanted by (musical) theatre in your life? And how?
When I was three years old, my parents took me to see a performance of Don Giovanni. I can't remember it myself, but they told me they were very surprised when I sat quietly and attentively through the entire opera. Later, as a student, I was awarded a scholarship to attend a performance of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival. I was completely enchanted by the mystical sounds coming from the orchestra pit.
Why do people sing and why don't they speak?
Singing is linguistic emotion in sound form. There is no more direct way to express emotions than through singing. The combination of melody and lyrics touches us humans in our innermost being.
What role can/should (musical) theatre play in today's society?
Theatre is a place of collective experience. Especially in an increasingly digitalised world, where we are constantly bombarded with so much fast-paced information and our lives are lived at an accelerated pace, we need places where we can process it all. There is no better place than a theatre to process our emotions. Where else can you spend several hours dealing with topics such as love, grief, humour, longing... in the company of other people?
