Ecological Sustainability and Diversity at the Volksoper

The Volksoper Vienna is committed to a holistic understanding of sustainability, ranging from ecological responsibility to steps towards greater diversity. On many levels, we are working to make our everyday theatre operations even more sustainable. Here you can find all information about ecological sustainability and our diversity concept.

The Volksoper Vienna is aware that operating a music theatre inevitably involves the consumption of resources and the release of emissions. With this awareness, we strive to act as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible in all areas of our work, in order to minimize our ecological footprint.

We are convinced that culture and sustainability are not incompatible worlds but can complement one another. Our dedication to art goes hand in hand with our commitment to the environment. For this reason, we actively take measures to make a meaningful contribution to protecting our environment.

Our sustainability efforts are already well underway, and we are proud of the progress we have achieved so far. These include measures to reduce our energy consumption, decrease waste, and use sustainable materials and practices in our daily operations. However, our journey toward greater sustainability is far from complete. In the coming years, we will continue to develop innovative solutions and intensify our efforts to live up to our responsibility toward the environment.

We hope you will join us on this path and contribute together to protecting our environment. By each of us making a small contribution, we can help foster more sustainable practices.

Since April 2024, the Volksoper Vienna has been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel (Österreichisches Umweltzeichen).

The Volksoper Vienna is committed to the initiative “Climate-Friendly Cultural Institutions” (Klimafitte Kulturbetriebe). The projects implemented between 2023 and 2025 are co-financed with funds from the European Union – NextGenerationEU, in cooperation with the Climate and Energy Fund.

Diversity at the Volksoper: A Place of Encounter

For us, diversity is neither an empty phrase nor a box to be ticked. It is a principle we live by—because it makes us better. From the business world we know that diverse teams are more productive, foster richer discourse, and find more creative solutions. This is even more true in the arts, where exploring different perspectives lies at the very heart of our work. Living diversity is therefore, for us, a deeply self-interested decision. This includes not only people of different backgrounds, skin colors, and sexual orientations, but also people of different ages, body types, and viewpoints.

Our collaboration with Vienna Pride, the wide-ranging projects of the Junge Volksoper (Young Volksoper)—whose goal is to secure and expand cultural participation (for example, the project “We Are All MATILDA”, which aims to make our children’s choir more diverse)—and our commitment to the ensemble, which unites talents from all over the world: all of these are just some of the measures we are taking as part of our diversity concept. Because ensuring cultural participation for all parts of society is a matter very close to our hearts!
