Tomos Owen Jones

When were you first enchanted by (musical) theatre? What was the experience?

I have always loved music and singing (I even sang in a rock band throughout my teenage years), but the first time I discovered music and theatre combined was watching La Boheme at Welsh National Opera. The wonderful story told with the most beautiful music instantly made me think "I want to do that!".

What role can/should music theatre play in today’s society?

I think that music theatre has a huge role to play in today's society, whether that be offering a chance to reflect, a space to platform important stories, or as one of the purest forms of escapism.  Being able to watch a team of incredibly talented people with a huge range of skills working together to bring a story to life, right in front of you, is an incredibly special thing!

Prima la musica or prima le parole?

Being both a singer and a composer, I have to sit on the fence with this question, as I feel that it's always a perfect balance of both.  I find it so interesting to see how different composers have chosen to set text that has inspired them, and their interpretation of the text is often the first step in our own interpretation of a character. I think it's important to appreciate and understand them both separately, but the real magic is when they combine to create incredible drama and storytelling.
