Catherine Voeffray

Catherine Voeffray completed her training as a styler at the Zurich Fashion Design School and initially worked as a freelancer. In 1993 she was hired to the Theater Bern, where she became deputy head of the costume department in 1997. She designed costumes for numerous theatre and opera productions, and also worked for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Teatro del Giglio Lucca. For Martin Schläpfer, Catherine Voeffray has created costumes already for the Bern Ballet. This was followed by numerous productions for ballettmainz, including »Kunst der Fuge«, »ein Wald, ein See«, »3« and »Sinfonien«, as well as for the Ballett am Rhein. The main highlights of these are »Nacht umstellt« and »Ein Deutsches Requiem«, which has also been in the repertoire of the Vienna State Ballet since 2021. Catherine Voeffray made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2020 with her costume design for Martin Schläpfer's world premiere of »4« – a production at the Vienna State Opera, which is also available on DVD. In a team with choreographer Stijn Celis, she has been a guest with companies such as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens Montréal, Cullberg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Cedar Lake Dance Company New York, Ballett der Semperoper Dresden, Aalto Ballett Essen and Ballett des Staatstheaters Saarbrücken. She has worked with Johan Inger at the Opéra de Lyon, and another production at the Semperoper Dresden is in planning. In 2023, her collaboration with Martin Chaix, which began at the Ballett am Rhein, continued in a world premiere at the Ballet du Rhin Strasbourg. Her reconstruction of Rei Kawakubo’s costumes for Merce Cunningham’s »Scenario« was seen with the Ballett am Rhein in Düsseldorf.
