At the Austrian Music Theater Award, presented on September 17, 2025, Lass uns die Welt vergessen – Volksoper 1938 by Theu Boermans and Keren Kagarlitsky was honored as “Best First/World Premiere.”
The production, in which we bring our own history to the stage, is currently part of the repertoire—you shouldn’t miss the chance to experience this award-winning work.
Prizes and Nominations for the Volksoper!
The new season has begun, and right away we can celebrate prizes and nominations for our productions from past seasons, which bear witness to the national and international impact of our performances. We are especially delighted that the awards and nominations honor two works that had their world premiere at the Volksoper—proof of how vibrant and forward-looking musical theater is at our house.
Since 2011, Barbara Pálffy has been a member of the Volksoper ensemble as a theater photographer. With her unique eye and instinct for the right moment, she captures the stage events of the Volksoper—and also of other theaters in and around Vienna—in an impressive way. She has been honored for her contributions to musical theater as a theater photographer. In addition, we are delighted about the award for Jaye Simmons in the category “Best Young Female Artist” for the 2023/24 season. Yet another proof that the future of musical theater is growing at the Volksoper.
It was also announced today, on September 18, 2025, that the opera Alma by composer Ella Milch-Sheriff and librettist Ido Ricklin has been nominated in the “World Premiere” category at the prestigious International Opera Awards. Last season, the work had its world premiere at the Volksoper under the direction of Ruth Brauer-Kvam, with Omer Meir Wellber conducting and Annette Dasch in the title role.
In addition, the Volksoper Vienna has been nominated in the “Sustainability” category.
The International Opera Awards were founded in 2012 by philanthropist Harry Hyman. They honor outstanding achievements in opera worldwide and celebrate the diversity of this art form. In addition, the Opera Awards Foundation grants scholarships to emerging opera talents around the globe. The finalists of this year’s awards, among them the Volksoper with Alma, come from 25 countries across five continents—a powerful sign of the truly international spirit of opera.
Among the 2025 nominees are also Wallis Giunta, who has appeared in numerous roles at the Volksoper, in the “Readers' Award” category, and Johannes Erath, director of our Csárdásfürstin, in the “Director” category. You can vote for Wallis Giunta here!
