Rehearsals begin for the musical Spring Awakening
Spring Awakening is a rock musical based on Frank Wedekind’s famous play Frühlings Erwachen. It tells the story of three teenagers searching for love, truth, and self-determination in the strict and cold world of adults. Even today, these themes remain highly relevant—not only for young people.
Frédéric Buhr, who has already demonstrated at the Volksoper with tick, tick, BOOM! how powerful and compellingly he can bring rock musicals to the stage, directs this production with outstanding young singers and an ensemble full of youthful energy. Future musical stars who can authentically convey the themes of the piece.
Author Steven Sater and composer Duncan Sheik worked for seven years on their adaptation of the play, developing it together with young people. Their rock musical went on to win numerous awards, including eight Tony Awards in 2007—among them Best Musical. The album received the Grammy Award, and Entertainment Weekly called the music “the greatest Broadway score of this decade.”
Plenty of good reasons not to miss this musical!
