Ronja Räubertochter by Astrid Lindgren tells the story of Ronja, the daughter of the robber chief Mattis, who is born during a thunderstorm when a lightning strike splits Mattis Castle in two and the rival clan of Borka moves in. Instead of continuing her parents’ feud, Ronja befriends Birk, the son of her archenemy, and flees with him into the forest, where they experience freedom, nature, and independence.

The stage version at the Volksoper Wien, adapted by Stephan Lack and directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam, tells the story as a musical adventure about friendship, reconciliation, and growing up. With Nordic-inspired music by Kyrre Kvam, Ronja’s journey becomes an atmospheric plea for courage, tolerance, and the strength to follow one’s own path, until in the end not only spring but also peace returns.
