What would an allotment garden association (in Austrian: Kleingartenverein) be without its clubhouse? Without its pub, where people gossip, vote, drink, and sometimes pound the table? In the Volksoper allotment garden association, this place is called Zur heißen Zitrone, where everyone regularly meets for a spritzer and a cheese toastie: long-time residents, newcomers, artist-bobos, retirees – everyone who has managed to get their hands on a spot in the idyllic oasis and who is keen to defend the patch of green that belongs only to them …
In a city where green is a rarity, a spot in a “Kleingartenverein“ is a coveted prize: sought after by many, granted to few. And once obtained, it must be defended – territory, appearances, and the delicate choreography of communal life. In Zur heißen Zitrone, we tell the big and small stories of this microcosm – a mirror of Austria itself. And what binds them together is, of course, music: Austropop. From its heyday to today’s voices, this musical journey offers a witty, entertaining cross-section of Austria’s recent cultural history.
