When were you first enchanted by (musical) theatre? What was the experience?
When I was six years old, I saw a performance of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman at Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe and was immediately captivated by the music. I then watched every subsequent performance in the series from a chair at the stage manager’s desk; from that moment on, my love of music was truly kindled.
Which moment in the production process (from learning a part to the performance) do you like best?
For me, the best moment is always the orchestra rehearsal. That first time we come together with the orchestra is something quite special. The piece finally takes on the sound that everyone has been waiting for since rehearsals began; all my colleagues sing through the whole piece for the first time; you get to dress up nicely and make music together. After the full orchestra rehearsal, everyone is always motivated and happy to move into the final rehearsal phase.
What does an audience give to a performer?
Above all, it is the audience that provides the energy. Most artists will agree that their performances on stage are always a cut above when there is an audience present, and that performing in front of an audience always allows you to surpass yourself. We owe a great deal to the audience, because they motivate us to give our very best in terms of both performance and music.
