There are also numerous nominations for artists and institutions with diverse connections to the Volksoper. Morris Robinson, nominated for Best Male Singer, was most recently heard at the Volksoper as Sarastro. The Fundación Ibáñez Atkinson – Young Artist Programme, which supports the Volksoper’s STUDIO V!, has been nominated in the “Equal Opportunities” category. Our Head of Artistic Design, Christof Hetzer, created the set design for Deborah Warner’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Teatro Real / The Royal Ballet and Opera / Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), which has been nominated for Best New Production.
The International Opera Awards are among the most prestigious honours in the international opera world. Founded in 2012, they recognise outstanding achievements across a wide range of categories, with nominations selected by an international jury. The strong representation of the Volksoper Vienna in this international field is a special recognition of the artistic work of our theatre and of the people behind its productions.
Numerous Nominations for the Volksoper at the International Opera Awards 2026!
The nominations for the prestigious International Opera Awards 2026 were announced on September 23, 2026. Among the nominees are artists and institutions from 24 countries, including the Volksoper Vienna.
Best Director, Best Musical Theatre, Rising Star
Volksoper Director Lotte de Beer has been nominated in the “Best Director” category. Her productions of Die Zauberflöte and West Side Story are currently on stage at our theatre, while rehearsals for her new production of the musical Chicago recently got underway. In May, she will also direct Così fan tutte. We are delighted by this nomination and look forward to the upcoming premieres!
Keren Kagarlitsky, who has been closely associated with the Volksoper for many years as a conductor and composer, has been nominated as a “Rising Star.” Just a few days ago, the premiere took place of her orchestration of Kyrre Kvam’s composition for the family production Ronja Räubertochter. In June, she will also take on the musical direction of the new production Reigen.
The winners will be announced on November 21, 2026, at the MusikTheater an der Wien as part of a festive gala. We are delighted by the nominations and congratulate all the artists nominated.
