The great works of operatic literature are performed here just as regularly as the famous operettas that set out from Vienna to conquer the world. Musicals, performances by the Vienna State Ballet, exciting new discoveries, world premieres, and numerous special events complete a repertoire as diverse as at no other opera house.
Mozart’s The Magic Flute is performed regularly at the Volksoper Wien, as is Johann Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus — perhaps the most famous work of its kind. Operas such as Carmen or Le nozze di Figaro are performed alongside operetta highlights, from the lively summer comedy Im weißen Rössl to the British operetta The Pirates of Penzance. Musical masterpieces like West Side Story and rock musicals such as Spring Awakening captivate audiences just as ballet productions, including Marie Antoinette, do.
